Following the announcement of Cody Gakpo’s €50 million ($53.3m) deal from PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool has acquired one of their most expensive players ever.
The Dutch winger, who also shone for his country at the World Cup in Qatar, had a breakout season at PSV in 2021–2022, which he continued into this season for the club.
Gakpo had been coveted by Southampton and Leeds as recently as August, but initially, it appeared as though Manchester United might be able to negotiate a deal for him. However, Liverpool moved stealthily and swiftly to get there first after deciding earlier this season that a new forward was required.

Gakpo will be trying to make a bigger impact at Anfield than Takumi Minamino, who formerly wore the number 18 shirt for Liverpool.
Despite the fact that both clubs have approved the agreement and that it is definitive, Gakpo cannot be formally registered as a Liverpool player until the January transfer window begins on Sunday. He is therefore ineligible to play against Leicester on Friday night as a result.
The next day, Liverpool returns to play with a trip to Brentford in the Premier League on Monday night. Gakpo is unlikely to make his debut in that match, according to Klopp, maybe to give the 23-year-old a little more time to settle in at his new team.

Gakpo’s primary position in a front three will be on the left, according to Klopp, though he has confidence in the player’s ability to play wherever along the front line if necessary.
“The position he has played most often is on the left, that is clear. But he can play all four positions up front if you play a 4-2-3-1, and is still very young. The position he probably prefers he can play is on the left of a 4-3-3,” the Liverpool boss explained.
