Conte was without World Cup finalists Cristian Romero and Hugo Lloris for this Boxing Day match, so Japhet Tanganga and Fraser Forster made their Premier League debuts for the first time since January and May, respectively.

With Spurs conceding in their previous eight competitive matches, it was unsurprising to see their makeshift defence struggle and start slowly.

Brentford took the lead in the 15th minute when Mathias Jensen met Bryan Mbeumo’s deep cross on the volley. The ball was only half-blocked by Spurs keeper Fraser Forster, who replaced the rested France keeper Hugo Lloris before dropping for Janelt to convert from close range.

Tottenham responded by creating a couple of chances through Kulusevski. Brentford was denied a second goal before halftime when Toney’s effort was ruled offside.

On the other hand, Toney made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with a tap-in from a corner conceded by Tottenham defender Eric Dier’s sliced clearance.

Kane scores to start the comeback

Tottenham came roaring back in the second half, with star striker Kane heading home in the 65th minute to give his side a lifeline. Midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, one of five Tottenham starters to play in the World Cup, equalized six minutes later with a clear finish.

Tottenham’s Kane nearly won the game, but the crossbar saved his headed effort.

Tottenham is currently in fourth place in league with 30 points, while Brentford is in ninth place.

Managers Thoughts on the draw

Brentford manager Thomas Frank stated after the game that there was only one team on the pitch until Kane scored, adding that he and the players were disappointed with the final result.

“Until the Kane goal, only one team was on the pitch. It was an excellent performance, and the players are disappointed,” said Frank.

Kane hit the crossbar, and Toney missed from six yards out in a frantic final ten minutes as Premier League football reminded fans of its drama and value just 90 minutes into its return.

After the game, both managers praised the quality on display despite the fact that it was only the first game after a four-week World Cup break.

“What a game to relaunch the Premier League. What an advertisement for the league!” exclaimed Thomas Frank. “This is not the first time they’ve seen Tottenham, and it’s another exciting game,” Antonio Conte added.

“I understand we have great character and reaction; I understand that we believe in ourselves,” he added. “At the same time, it’s important to be stable for a team who wants to stay in a good position at the table. To concede the first and two goals for many games, we have to reflect on trying to find the solution.”

“We have to try to do this from the start. We have to start in this way. In our mind, it was so. We wanted to start in this way, but we started the game with a goal [conceded] and in the second half with a goal from a set-piece.”

Spurs next face Aston Villa on January 1st.
