  • AFC lost 1-0 to Posta Rangers
  • Tusker FC remained top of the league

FKF Premier League record champions Gor Mahia were held to a 1-1 draw by Kariobangi Sharks over the weekend as K’Ogalo dropped points for the first time this season.

Gor Mahia had been on a run of two consecutive victories while Sharks had won one and drawn another, both having played three matches so far. Gor coach Jonathan McKinstry blamed the defeat on some few minutes of madness in which he said his side lost composure.

“We started really well and pushed their weak areas and got a goal. But two or three minutes after we score, we had some crazy moments where we lost composure and they got advantage and equalized. I am disappointed by that,” the tactician said.

He added; “We had chances to score and win the game late on but we couldn’t. We take the point and move on but we need to be more aggressive in taking our chances.”

His opposite number William Muluya was pleased with the point and notes that his side have been improving game by game.

“It was a game of equal chances and I think we handled ourselves really well. A point is welcome for us. We lost a huge number of players but the new guys are doing well. The cohesion is coming nicely and the level of understanding among them is very high,” the coach stated.

Gor Mahia on a good run in the league

Gor Mahia were on a good run coming into the game and confidence was sky high as they seek to wrestle back the title from Tusker FC.

They got into the lead when Omalla rose to head in brilliantly from a cross on the left.

But, the lead didn’t last long as Sharks found a way back into the game. Tyson Otieno shot into the roof of the net after a cross from the right, following some good combination play at the edge of the Gor box.

With the result, Gor Mahia are fifth in the standings with seven points while Sharks are two below, both having played three matches.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards suffered their second defeat of the season after going down by a solitary goal to Posta Rangers at the Nyayo National Stadium. Cavin Odongo scored the lone goal for the mailmen who earned their first victory of the campaign after four matches.

Odongo beat his marker on the left before racing into the box and squeezing the ball between the keeper’s legs.

AFC coach Patrick Aussems was dejected with the game, saying his side should have taken advantage of their dominance especially in the second half.

Average first half, better second half

“We had an average first half where we lost too many balls. In the second half, it was only one team on the pitch and that was us. We were very good and we knew they would play long balls on the counter. I am displeased because they wasted a lot of time on the ground and in the end we get just four minutes of added time,” lamented the coach.

His opposite number John Kamau was elated with the victory, though he admitted the performance wasn’t as pleasant as he would have wished.

“It was a very tough game against a good opponent. As much as it wasn’t one of the best performances, the most important thing is that we got the three points. We can now soberly focus on the next assignments. The season is still young and we have lots of room for improvement,” said the tactician.

In other fixtures of matches played over the weekend, KCB beat Bidco United 2-1 in Thika, Kakamega Homeboyz beat FC Talanta 4-2 in Kakamega, Nzoia Sugar beat City Stars 1-0 while Ulinzi Stars and Sofapaka played to a 1-1 draw.
