All you need to know about Birmingham 2022

  • Up to 1800 medals from 19 different sporting events to be won.
  • This year’s event is a boast to female and para-sports athletes in the Commonwealth Games.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are set to be held in Birmingham from 28th July to 8th August 2022 attracting up to 72 nations participating in this year’s events.

The eleven-day event will see more than 4,500 athletes come together to fight for at least 1875 medals from 19 different sporting events.

This year’s event is termed to be a big stage and a boast for female and para sports in the history of the Commonwealth games with the introduction of Women Cricket T20, Basket 3 by 3 and Wheelchair basket 3 by 3.

England is hosting this year’s event for the third time in its history in Birmingham which is one of the largest Cities in the UK after it was announced as the host on 21st December 2017.

Venues

The 2022 Commonwealth games will have up to 15 different venues that will be used to showcase the Games with seven located in the central part of the city while the remaining eight are in the west midlands area.

Among the venues is the Lee Valley VeloPark, which is one of the historical athletics venues. It’s well known in cycling tracks having hosted the London 2012 Olympics.

Alexander Stadium; located in Perry Barr the stadium will host major athletics events and ceremonies at the Commonwealth games with a capacity of up to 3200 heads.

Arena Birmingham which is located on the Westside is an existing Arena that was opened in 1991 and will be hosting Artistic Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics with a ticketed capacity of 15,800.

Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Edgbaston with a ticketed capacity of 2500 will be hosting the women’s T20 Cricket.

Other Stadiums include Smithfield, Sutton Park, University of Birmingham, and Victoria Square.

Who are the Athletics Champions competing

 Emma McKeon

McKeon is an Australian swimmer and also a four-time record holder in the swimming discipline having won up to seven swimming medals with four gold medals at last year’s Olympic games in Tokyo Japan.

She also has eight golds commonwealth games.

Pandelela specializes in diving and is among the 58 Malaysian athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games.

She has competed in different events including the London 2012 where she became the first Malaysian female Olympic Medalist in the history of Malaysia.

At the FINA World Championships, she settled for bronze in 10m, and she’s looking forward to improving her performance in Birmingham.

Cody Simpson

Cody Simpson is an Australian Simmer and is among the athletics stars to watch out for at the commonwealth games.

In the last edition of Commonwealth Day and the opening of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games he appeared as a singer but this time he will be competing.

He will be competing in the men’s 50m and 100m butterfly as part of his wider ambition to make it to Paris 2024.

Opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of this year’s commonwealth games is set to be held at Alexander Stadium on 28th July 2022.

According to Iqbal Khan, a theater director who is also an associate Director at Birmingham 2022, the opening ceremony will aim to showcase the vivid and vibrant confidence of Birmingham.

Closing ceremony

The closing ceremony will take place on the last day of the eleven-day event on 8 August 2022 at Alexander Stadium.

On this day Victoria will be formally handed the mandate of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
