- The FKF Transitional Committee will work for two more months
- Former CJ Aron Ringera has been replaced as Chair
- Kenya still remains suspended by FIFA
Retired Lt Gen. Maurice Oyugi will replace Former Chief Justice Aron Ringera as the chairman of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Transitional Committee after Sports CS Amina Mohamed extended their tenure by a further two months.
Oyugi was Ringera’s deputy and will now take charge of the team with the former CJ leaving after serving since its inception.
CS Amina Mohamed had created the Transitional Committee after the term of the Caretaker Committee ended three weeks ago. The Transitional team had initially taken charge for two weeks which allowed the completion of the men and women’s Premier League.
Vide a Gazette Notice on Saturday, the CS retained most of the members of the team which will be tasked with running football in the country.
“1. The mandate of the Transition Committee shall be to—
(a) conduct all the affairs of Football Kenya Federation in accordance with the Sports Act, 2013 and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Constitution;
(b) co-ordinate and ensure the smooth running of Football Kenya Federation operations including team preparations for all local and international sporting events; and
(c) co-ordinate and facilitate the validation of the FKF Draft Constitution.” The Gazette Notice signed by the CS reads.
Sports CS Amina Mohamed receives the report
The move by the CS now puts further doubts to hopes whether Kenya’s suspension by world governing body FIFA will be lifted. Kenya was handed a suspension by FIFA in March over government interference after CS Amina disbanded the Football Kenya Federation and shut down their headquarters at Kandanda House.
Despite calls by FIFA to reinstate the Federation officials, CS Amina has refused to back down and instead installed committees to run the game.
The CS had installed a Caretaker Committee to run the Federation for six months and having not finished their assigned tasks, created a Transitional Committee which was to serve for three weeks. Now, the Committee’s tenure has been extended.
However, it will be interesting to see if they can achieve their targets including the validation of a new constitution, which according to the current FKF klaws have to be done by the General Assembly.
Last week, elected FKF Branch and Club officials met and formed what they termed as a Steering Committee to help put the chaotic football scene back into order.
However, with the CS moving to extend the Transitional Committee’s tenure, more confusion is expected.
The current football mess saw Kenya’s women’s team fail to play in the qualifiers for this month’s Women’s Cup of Nations while the men’s team was expelled from the qualifiers of the 2022 AFCON and African Nations Championship (CHAN).
If the situation remains the same and a middle ground is not sought between the Government and FIFA, then Kenyan teams Tusker FC and Vihiga Queens will also not play Continental football next season after winning their respective leagues.
While the men and Women’s leagues have already concluded, the National Super League is in it’s sunset days, but the competition has been marred with a myriad of claims of match fixing, poor officiating and poor organization.
