Ralf Rangnick described Liverpool’s defeat of Manchester United at Anfield as “embarrassing” and “humiliating” before admitting that the club is planning a summer rebuild that might include as many as ten new faces.

On Tuesday night, United was way below the level of title-chasing Liverpool. Their performance reflected that, with Mohamed Salah scoring a brace with Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane’s goals.

United have lost the season head-to-head 9-0 on aggregate after losing 5-0 at Old Trafford, and Rangnick believes Jurgen Klopp’s side is six years ahead of where United are right now.

“It is embarrassing, disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” Rangnick said. “Especially the first half, we were just not up to it.

“Against a team like this, if you want to have a chance, you have to cause them problems and make use of those few counter-attacking moments ourselves, and we couldn’t, and that’s why we lost 4-0.

ACCORDING TO RANGNICK UNITED NEEDS TO BE REBUILD

Rangnick was frank in his postgame assessment, saying that the new manager, who is expected

to be Ajax Amsterdam coach Erik Ten Hag would have to rip the team apart in the summer.

“If you analyse the team, it needs a rebuild. There are six, eight, maybe ten new players, and before you sign them, you need to be aware of what kind of football the new manager wants to play and then fit into that kind of profile.”

While United are on course for their lowest ever Premier League points total, Liverpool is still in contention for an incredible Quadruple after winning the Carabao Cup and securing places in the FA Cup final and Champions League semifinals.

After their win, Liverpool moved ahead of Manchester City in the table, with Pep Guardiola’s side set to face Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. They may reclaim the Premier League lead with a win.

“They have better players than we have, which was reflected by today’s result,” added Rangnick of Klopp’s Liverpool.

“There will be a rebuild for sure. That was obvious in the first three or four weeks for me. For us, it is extremely embarrassing. We have to admit they are better than us.”

SALAH SAID UNITED MADE IT EASY FOR LIVERPOOL TO WIN

Mohamed Salah, who scored two goals for Liverpool against United, said the visitors made it easy for them by giving away the ball in advantageous areas during the game.

“They make our life easier in the midfield and the back. They always try to give us the ball in a one against one situation to make our lives much easier,” Salah said.

“When we defend, we had a clean sheet here and a clean sheet there, so they make our life easier.

“We want to score one goal, and once we get the first, go for the second. Once we get the second, go for the third. It was a top performance from us here and away also. Hopefully, carry on like this.”

BRUNO FERNANDES AGREES WITH RANGNICK OVER UNITED’S POOR PERFORMANCE

Bruno Fernandes, a United midfielder, agreed with his manager that the performance fell far short of the expectations of the club’s supporters.

“The fans don’t deserve us to play this way. They deserve more from us. The way they stay and applaud us, they deserve more. We have to raise our level higher,” said Fernandes, who rejected the idea that the players were not trying.

“I think everyone runs. There is an effort from everyone. I don’t think someone does not give 100%. We have to do it for ourselves, the clubs, the fans and everyone.

“We have to say things, but that is kept in the dressing room. Now it is over. We have to think of the next game.”

According to the Portugal playmaker, the difference between the two teams was evident.

“Liverpool is ready for the title. We are not. I don’t need to be here saying about the difference in the level. From top to bottom, we have to look at ourselves and understand what is going wrong,” he said.

United slipped to sixth in the Premier League and is three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur having played a game more.

“We are competing until the end,” Fernandes said. “Nobody can put down and think it is over. We have something to fight for.”

United’s cumulative 9-0 defeat against Liverpool was the second-worst in the club’s history, only surpassed by the 11-0 over two games they suffered against Sunderland in 1892-93.
