English footballer Mason Greenwood who plays for the Premier League Club Manchester United has been released on bail amid the further investigation.

The 20-year old was on Sunday detained on suspicion of rape and assault after a woman alleging incidents of violence posted pictures and videos on social media. However the United’s forward was suspended from playing or training with the Red Devils.

On Monday police were given an opportunity to interrogate the English International who was further arrested on grounds of sexual assault and having threatened to kill.

The Greater Manchester Police said on Wednesday that the 20-year old was released from custody on bail as investigations go on to determine what transpired. The statement noted: “A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation”. The United’s forward was to stay away from playing or training with the Red Devils following the allegations on weekend.

The allegations were evident on Instagram on Sunday morning and consisted of photographs, videos and a voice note which was alleged to be the conversation between the woman and the English International. However, they have since been deleted. Perhaps, claims of sexual violence must not be identified and their anonymity is protected for life under the law. The 20-year old forward made his debut in 2019 and has made 129 appearances since then for Manchester United.

Greenwood made his senior England debut in 2020. On Tuesday night, Manchester United released a statement openly condemning the violence of any kind. Manchester United said, “As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood would not train with, or play for, the club until further notice.” The 20-year old, from Bradford, was earlier removed from versions of the FIFA 22 game following his initial arrest after Nike suspended their deal with the player.

The spokesperson of game’s manufacturer Electronic Arts said: “Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft.” However, an earlier Nike statement read: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.” Call the 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247 for confidential, non-judgmental information and support.

GMP reported that the player had been arrested after the force became aware of the videos, images and recorded voice that was posted by a woman who reported the incident of physical violence. It further noted that magistrates were given a second extension to keep the United’s striker in custody until Wednesday.

The woman has however been offered specialist support as the enquiries continue a force representative had earlier on said in a statement. Greenwood joined the famous list of players that wear the number 11 after wearing the number 26 for his break out season in 2019.

The striker has represented the England under-17 team, having made six appearances in 2017-2018 and featured in the squad in the Algarve Tournament in Portugal. The English International began his career as a midfielder but gradually developed into a centre forward, and he often plays on the right flank for Manchester United.
