Next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) has been rescheduled to take place in January 2022 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) confirmed on Tuesday.
The African Nations Championship (Chan) and Afcon were due to be held in Cameroon, and the country will remain as the host nation.
Caf president Ahmad Ahmad said: “The Caf Executive Committee is satisfied with the Cameroonian authorities for their commitment towards the hosting of the two competitions. Cameroon is ready to host either competition and are within schedule.”
There have 383 747 confirmed Covid-19 infections in Africa, with South Africa and Egypt emerging as the countries with the highest numbers.
South Africa as of Tuesday had recorded 151 209 Covid-19 infections, with 2657 deaths and 73 543 recoveries. Egypt has reported 68 311 infections, but with 2953 deaths. There have been 18 460 recoveries in the north African nation.
Meanwhile, the African Champions League and Confederation Cup will resume competition in September. The semi-finals will be played over one match instead of the traditional two-legged affairs. The venues are still to be decided.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for later this year, however, has been cancelled.
The Women’s Champions League will be launched in 2021.
In other developments, Caf has allocated an additional 16.2 million US dollars to assist member associations to mitigate challenges as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Each Member Associations will be entitled to 300 000 US dollars.
There has also been the confirmation of the appointment of Ali Aissaoui as Caf Commercial Director. Prior to joining Caf, the Moroccan served as Business Development Manager of FC Barcelona.
