Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge hailed the success of the virtual 42.2km relay event called “M A R A T H O N” over the weekend.

Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, and Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor also participated.

That high-powered quartet took part in the team event on Saturday and Sunday which invited runners from around the world to join teams of four to complete a full marathon together, alone.

Runners could register as teams or could enter solo and be assigned to a team with fellow runners from around the world.

Kipchoge, Bekele, Cheptegei, and Kamworor were randomly be added to 10 of the participating teams.

“Today I ran for my Brazilian team, but together we have all run as one. Runners from all over the world have joined us and showed how ours is a running world,” said Kipchoge.

Kipchoge set the men’s marathon record of 2:01:39 at the Berlin Marathon in 2018, and in October last year became the first man to break two-hours for the 42.2km distance in an unofficial challenge run in Vienna.

Known as the Ineos159 Challenge, Kipchoge with a series of different pacemakers clocked 1:59:40 to become the first person to break two hours for the marathon distance.

Last week, Kipchoge revealed it took him two weeks to get over the news of the London Marathon postponement – in the event the 35-year-old was defending champion.
