Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has finally cancelled its domestic cricket season, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Cricket was halted in the country on March 18, before Zimbabwe went into lockdown 12 days later.

With teams competing in the Logan Cup and other first-class competitions, ZC decided it would not crown any winners as the sides had not played an equal number of games.

Former Zimbabwe cricketer Hamilton Masakadza and current board member told bdcrictime.com: “We were looking forward to the end of the season,” he said of cancelling the rest of the season.

“But given the current situation in Zimbabwe and around the world, it is unrealistic to expect cricket to start soon.”

“Zimbabwe Cricket has decided to cancel the 2019-20 season. We will not give away the trophy to anyone because the teams have not played an equal number of matches.”

ZC, however, has not yet postponed its tour to Afghanistan in June with five T20 Internationals scheduled between the nations. Though it seems highly unlikely the tour will take place, ZC has not communicated any plans to postpone the tour.

Though Zimbabwe has just 34 confirmed cases of Covid-19, the effects of the national lockdown have been devastating. Over half the population in the country have required food aid, and following a massive drought last year, the economy has already shrunk by six per cent.

On Wednesday, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sent an aircraft carrying 7.7 metric tons of medical supplies to Zimbabwe to cushion the impact of the coronavirus in the country.
