The Confederation of African Football (Caf) on Sunday paid tribute to nine Etoile du Guinea players who died in a bus accident on their way to play a league game.

The incident occurred on March 5 just outside the city of Mamou, about 250-kilometres from the capital Conakry, on their way to Kankan for the first match of the Guinean second-tier league.

Nine players died, with 17 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

“On behalf of CAF, we offer our sincere condolences to the Guinea Football Federation and the entire Guinean football family.

“You can count on our support during this difficult ordeal that you are going through. We wish you strength during these painful moments,” Caf acting general secretary Abdelmounaim Bah wrote in a message to the Guinea Football Federation.
