Botswana, Morocco, Guinea, Tanzania and Liberia recorded wide margin wins over the weekend matches of the preliminary round of the continental qualifiers for the Under-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020.

The result takes the quintet closer to the next round where they will be joined by Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, who drew a bye at the prelims.

The journey began on Friday in Gaborone, where Botswana put five goals past a hapless Zimbabwe. Dimpho Serdiwa grabbed a brace and one each from Precious Tlhapi, Jessica Modise and Lorato Motlogelwa to give coach Tapaphiwa Gaebolae’s charges a flying start to their campaign.

In Djibouti city, Morocco proved too strong for their host Djibouti, with a 7-0 win. The goals were scored by Hajar Errakas, Salma Temmar, Oumaima Heddiya, Hajar Jbilou, Salma Stiten, Khaoula Knia and Wissal Nassiri to put the Moroccans in the driving seat.

Elsewhere in Conakry, Guinea accounted for neighbours Guinea Bissau beating them 5-0. Fatoumata Dede and Nana Camara scored a brace each whilst Fatoumata Samoura was the other scorer.

Forward Aisha Masaka scored a hattrick as Tanzania beat Burundi 5-1 in Dar es Salaam on Saturday. Joyce Meshaki and Protasia Mbunda were also on target.

Another game also on Saturday was in Kampala, which saw host Uganda beating Ethiopia 2-0 in another regional derby. A goal in each half from Juliet Nakulenge and Catherine Nagaddya was enough for the Ugandans.

Later on Sunday, Liberia put four past Niger to put their noses in front, and a huge boost towards a place at the next round.

The second leg matches will be played in a fortnight.

Three teams will qualify to represent Africa at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for November 2 to 21 in India.
