Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei eyes Female World Athlete of the Year 2019 award

The star is one of the five nominees for the prestigious prize

Kenya’s star marathon runner Brigid Kosgei is one of five nominees in the running for the Female World Athlete of the Year 2019 award.

Kosgei has established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage of marathon running. She has finished in the top two in eight of the nine marathons that she has run in her career.

This year she set a world record of 2:14:04 when she won the Chicago Marathon. She also won the London Marathon

Kosgei has run world-leading times this year: 1:05:28 for the half-marathon and 1:04:28 on a downhill course.

Africa will also have an interest in another nominee, Ethiopian-born Dutch national Sifan Hassan who won world 1500m and 10,000m titles in world-leading times of 3:51.95 and 30:17.62.

Another 2019 highlight was the Diamond League double after lifting the 1500m and 5000m titles.

She showed her versatility by breaking the world mile record with 4:12.33 in Monaco.

The winner will be announced at the World Athletics Awards 2019 in Monaco on 23 November.

The other finalists are (in alphabetical order): Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM), Dalilah Muhammad (USA) and Yulimar Rojas (VEN).
