Mario Hermoso, Atletico Madrid’s defender is at a crossroads in his career. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, his future at Atletico Madrid is uncertain. There are transfer speculations, with Aston Villa and Saudi Arabia being mentioned as potential destinations for the 28-year-old.

His contract with Atletico will expire in June this year, making him a free agent and a hot cake in the transfer market. His transfer has brought about transfer speculations with several European clubs eyeing his signature.

He has been a valuable player for Atletico and was a vital part of the club’s success in their La Liga title run in the 2020/21 season and has been one of the best scorers in the team, scoring in most of their matches, especially during the 2018-19 season.

Aston Villa are the frontrunners in the race to sign the defender on a free transfer and manager Unai Emery has shown interest in bringing him to the Premier League, to boost his defensive options at the club.

His transfer will guarantee him enough playing time, a new challenge and it will also be a potential for a salary increase.

His transfer will guarantee him enough playing time, a new challenge and it will also be a potential for a salary increase. The club will also benefit from his experience playing in La Liga and European competitions, offering defensive stability.

It is also his play style that is attracting these clubs to sign him as he is known for calmness on the ball and can build out from the back, a style that would fit manager Unai Emery’s preference.

He can also play as both a centre-back and a left-back, providing valuable squad depth signing him on a free transfer will also favour Aston Villa and allow them to invest in other areas of the squad.

Emery faced him during his time as a manager in Sevilla and Villarreal in La Liga, which drives his interest in him since he is conversant with his play style that suits what he wants in his defence team.

If he gets to sign with another La Liga club, he will be in a better position having played previously in one since he knows what it entails and what is expected of him in his defense, as well as giving him a chance to reunite with former teammates.

However, there could also be a problem with his playtime, it could be limited and could also have a lower salary compared to what he earned at Atletico Madrid.

Will Hermoso fit in the Premier League?

While he has not previously played in the Premier League and if he happens to join Aston Villa, he will be on a new challenge. The premier league is quite demanding as he is expected to deliver more.
