Bundesliga powerhouses Bayern Munich saw their horrid campaign come to an end on Saturday evening as they played TSG Hoffenheim.

It was not the ending they expected as Hoffenheim came from two goals down to secure a 4-2 win. Bayern were 2-0 up inside six minutes thanks to goals from Mathys Tel and Alphonso Davies. However, the match suddenly took a different turn when Maximilian Beier pulled one goal back for the hosts in the eighth minute.

Andrej Kramaric levelled the scores in the 68th minute and then scored two quick goals in the dying minutes of the clash to earn Hoffenheim a 4-2 win over Bayern. The victory saw Hoffenheim finish seventh on the Bundesliga standings and earn a qualification spot in next season’s Europa Conference League.

Bayer Leverkusen claimed the top spot with 90 points after beating Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday. Xabi Alonso’s side were already crowned Bundesliga champions weeks ago when it was mathematically impossible for them to lose the top spot in the standings.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich, who were not without England international Harry Kane in their final match of the season due to injury, dropped to third place in the standings.

The 2023-24 season was the first campaign in a decade that Bayern have gone without winning a trophy. The Bavarians were knocked out of all domestic competitions before losing to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last week.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel is expected to leave the club as announced earlier this year. The 50-year-old has been in charge of Bayern for slightly over a year and said was not happy with how his players were not focused on what was his final match in charge.

“We started really well but then we had a string of string of individual mistakes. In the second half we played well for 15 minutes but then it was again a series of individual mistakes and loss of possession. We gave away a two-goal lead for a completely unnecessary and bitter defeat.” Thomas Tuchel said in a short news conference after his side’s defeat to Augsburg, as per ESPN.

Bayern Munich will be searching for a new manager this summer to lead the squad next season.

How Hoffenheim Beat Bayern Munich

Hoffenheim got off to what was possibly the worst start as they conceded in the fourth minute. Thomas Muller, who equalled Sepp Maier’s record of most Bundesliga appearances for Bayern Munich, assisted the opener which was scored by Mathys Tel.

Tel, who scored his tenth goal of the season for the Bavarians across all competitions, then assisted the second goal of the match scored by Alphonso Davies. The left-back was just at the right place to slide home Tel’s pass and record his second goal in the last three games.

Manuel Neuer offered Hoffenheim a lifeline when his poor pass allowed the hosts to pull one goal back. Andrej Kramaric, who intercepted Neuer’s pass, created a big chance for teammate Maximilian Bier to score the match’s third goal inside eight minutes.

The goals dried out afterwards and Neuer made up for his mistake by making two big saves to deny Hoffenheim around the half-hour mark.

Both sides created chances in the second half but it was Hoffenheim who found the back of the net first, thanks to Kramaric’s finish. The Croatian levelled the scores in the 68th minute. There was more drama in the dying minutes of the game as Kramaric scored two quick goals to seal the win for Hoffenheim.
