Sheffield United’s 5-1 humiliation against Newcastle on Saturday resulted in their relegation from the Premier League.

The Blades came out strong in the North East, knowing that a loss would formally confirm their relegation to the EFL Championship. Anel Ahmedhodzic’s early header gave them the lead.

The defender’s shocking first goal, though, would not portend well for Sheffield United, as a merciless Newcastle comeback saw Alexander Isak score twice in addition to goals from Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson, and Ben Osborn.

With three games left, the 20th-placed Blades can still climb out of the bottom three, but they are starting to get ready for life back in the second division. Meanwhile, seventh-place Newcastle has closed the gap to Manchester United to just one point as a result of the Red Devils’ draw with Burnley.

In their matchup on Saturday, the already-relegated Sheffield team may at least attempt to knock down Nottingham Forest, while on May 4, Newcastle travels to the 19th-place Clarets.

Five minutes in, the Blades stunned St. James’ Park with a brilliant run in behind the Magpies defense by Ahmedhodzic, who headed Gustavo Hamer’s cross through Martin Dubravka’s legs. The Blades knew that a point was at least necessary if they were to continue their survival fight.

Having failed to win their previous fifteen Premier League games after falling behind, Newcastle were yet to win a game when behind. If Dan Burn hadn’t made a vital save from Cameron Archer’s goal-bound effort in the sixteenth minute, Newcastle’s mountain to climb would have grown much higher.

In the 24th minute, Dubravka was called upon once more to deny Ben Brereton Diaz. This proved to be a crucial intervention, as Isak, assisted by Jacob Murphy’s exquisite through pass, proceeded to continue his scorching form for St. James’ Park after only two minutes.

Isak’s 18th goal of the year did not, however, come before a barrage of goals from the Magpies. In the 31st minute, Mason Holgate’s header hit the crossbar and Andre Brooks’s attempt went wide, giving Chris Wilder’s team another opportunity to grab the lead.

A diving header by Guimaraes into the far side of the net, nine minutes into the second half, met Anthony Gordon’s free kick, virtually putting the final nail in Sheffield United’s Premier League coffin had they not taken advantage of similar opportunities.

Just inside the area, Mason Holgate pulled down Gordon, and Isak coolly scored a penalty beyond the helpless Wes Foderingham to extend Sheffield United’s advantage just before the hour mark. That basically ended the Magpies’ Premier League journey.

If the first half was any indication, Wilder’s team would surely lose, but instead of winning, they surrendered in the second half, losing to Osborn’s hilarious own goal in the 65th minute, which effectively condemned the visitors to Championship play.

Newcastle showed no mercy as Wilson scored his first Premier League goal since October only seven minutes after Osborn’s unlucky incident. Wilson took the ball down and finished with a flourish after Harvey Barnes slid too easily past a sea of yellow shirts.

The Blades were first given a penalty for what was seen to be a foul on Jayden Bogle by Murphy, but a VAR review reversed the judgment, adding salt to the wounds during injury time.

With 13 goals in their two meetings against the Blades this season, Newcastle’s performance broke records and left Wilder’s squad demoralized at full time. This is the most goals Newcastle has scored against a single team in a Premier League season.
