The Laureus Award 2024 is back with a bang featuring the most talented athletes across the world. Known as the “Ultimate Global Athletes’ Award,” the Laureus continues to be the benchmark for elite athletes throughout the globe.

These athletes have one inspiration in life; having their names added to an exclusive group of elite sportsmen and sportswomen every year.

WHERE IS LAUREUS AWARD 2024

The 25th Laureus World Sports Awards nominations are now out, kicking off the countdown to the most prestigious sporting event, which will take place in Madrid on April 22. Representatives of the Awards Host Partners attended the formal announcement of nominations at the historic Casa de Correos in Madrid. They included the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the President of the Madrid Region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the headquarters of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid.

Global athletes and Laureus Academy members Luís Figo, Ruud Gullit, Nawal El Moutawakel, and Alessandro Del Piero were also present during the announcement.

2024 LAUREUS WORLD SPORTS AWARDS NOMINEES

There are six Laureus Award 2024 Nominees selected by 1,300 members making up the Laureus Global Media Panel. This panel nominated the six athletes for each of the seven existing Laureus Award categories. Additionally, for the Award for Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability, the International Paralympic Committee conducted the voting process.

Alongside these prestigious categories, there is the Laureus Sport for Good Award. It will honour a program embodying the transformative potential of sports. This award category celebrates the inspirational sentiments of Laureus’ inaugural Patron, Nelson Mandela, who emphasized the ability of sports to enact societal change.

However, what sets these awards apart is the final phase of the adjudication process.  A vote by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. The adjudicators comprise Olympic champions, world-record holders, and athletes who have reshaped their respective sports.

HOW MANY FOOTBALLERS HAVE WON THE LAUREUS AWARD?

Argentine international footballer Lionel Messi is the only football player who has won a Laureus award, in 2020 and 2023. While no other footballer ever won this award, several national teams and clubs have won the Laureus World Team of the Year Award. They include Manchester United, Barcelona, and the Argentina national team.

WHO FOUNDED THE LAUREUS AWARDS?

As the Laureus Award 2024 comes to life, it looks back with pride to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation for its conception in 1998. It served as the driving force behind the awards. Johan Rupert, who chaired Richemont Company which dealt in luxury goods started the foundation.
