  • He scored a late winning La Liga goal to rivals Sevilla
  • He could be leaving Real Madrid due to lack of playing time
  • The 38-year-old is on the run to secure Madrid’s titles in La Liga and the Champions League

Luka Modric is a Croatian professional footballer who plays for Real Madrid as a midfielder and there are speculations that he will be leaving Madrid for Croatia.

The player has been a driving force for Madrid and he secured their victory in a game over Sevilla, which gave them a La Liga title. While his age is a bit of concern, he told his fans that age is just a number while skills still count and this is evident from his contribution at the Sunday, February 25th match between Real Madrid and Sevilla.

He is a mainstay of the Croatian national team and has been their captain to their most successful World Cup campaign.

Luka Modric Biography

He was in Adar, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia, a place that was marked by the Croatian War of Independence, forcing his family to flee from home. Despite the hardships, he found solace in football and played in the parking lot of a hotel where they sought refuge.

His youth career started at NK Zadar, and due to his small stature, he was rejected by bigger clubs who thought his physical frame was a hindrance to performance.

At the age of sixteen, he was signed by Dinamo Zagreb, then loaned to Bosnian club Zrinjski Mostar and Zapresic before returning to Zagreb three years later, leading his team to three consecutive Prva HNL titles.

What was Modric’s rising point?

Modric made a significant move to Tottenham Hotspur, joining the Premier League. Initially, he faced criticism due to his physical limitations and this move silenced his doubters with his exclusive dribbling skills.

He became a key player for Tottenham and he formed a midfield partnership with Gareth Bale, earned accolades for his playing skills, helping the team to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

After four years with the team, he signed a transfer with Real Madrid where he thrived and played a key role in the team’s dominance, with the team winning four Champions League titles in five years.

He is also a member of the Croatia national team and is currently their captain, leading the team to their most successful World Cup campaign, reaching the final in 2018 and he received the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament.

Luka Modric’s participation at Real Madrid

Since joining the club in 2012, the midfielder has been a legendary figure and has played a pivotal role in their success, winning five Champions League titles, three La Liga titles and numerous trophies as a team and individually.

For over a decade, he was known for his exceptional vision but over the recent seasons, there has been a shift in his participation. In this current season, his play time has reduced as he has only started 11 out of 25 league games that have led to a drop in his overall playing time.

At 38 years old, it is a fact that his physical attributes have naturally declined and that puts across a concern about his stamina and ability to compete at the highest level in a match.

However, he put that matter on pause when he scored a winning goal in a match against Sevilla on Sunday, February 25th 2024 and said that age is just a number, what counts is the skills and experience.

Could Modric be leaving Real Madrid soon?

As the situation has been, his playtime with Real Madrid has been reduced and coach Carlo Ancelotti has seen the player miss several matches. This suggests his rejection of a contract extension with the club.

The same cause has led to speculation about a potential transfer to another club where he can secure a starting role, with the priority being the Croatia national team where he is the captain.
