Borussia Dortmund are now firmly in the race for the top four after leapfrogging RB Leipzig on the Bundesliga standings. Edin Terzic side currently have 36 points, 13 behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen who have been in red-hot form since the arrival of Xabi Alonso.
Speaking after his side won the Dortmund vs Bochum match, Edin Terzic said that his side didn’t play an outstanding game despite earning all three points.
“We didn’t play an outstanding game, not a perfect game. But once again we’ve taken a step forward and were able to reward ourselves with a win.” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic is quoted by Blue Mountains Gazette.
Dortmund Vs Bochum
Having won their previous two games, Borussia Dortmund had the momentum facing VfL Bochum in the regional derby. They were gifted a perfect start when Donyell Malen was fouled in the box by Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann. The 35-year-old couldn’t redeem himself as he was sent the wrong way by Niklas Fullkrug from the spot.
However, Dortmund weren’t doing much and failed to create chances against a team that is 14th on the standings. As a result, the visitors started finding their way back into the game and looked dangerous in front of Dortmund’s goal. With time running out, Dortmund committed a series of defensive blunders but were lucky not to be punished.
Eventually, the visitors’ efforts paid off right on the stroke of half time as Nico Schlotterbeck gifted them with an own goal.
Patrick Osterhage was trying to find his teammate in the box when Schlotterbeck directed the ball into his own goal. Both sides relaxed after the break and the fans had to wait until the hour mark before seeing a big chance. It was Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko who fired a shot but Riemann did well to push it away.
Moukoko had a few other chances but squandered them all. Bochum had a golden opportunity when Schlotterbeck gave possession away just outside the box. However, Ian Maatsen’s sliding tackle saved the day as he reached for the ball before Matus Bero could decide whether to shoot or pass.

With 118 minutes left to play, Dortmund took a 2-1 lead, thanks to Fullkrug who jumped high above two defenders to head home Marcel Sabitzer’s cross. Bochum tried to find their way back into the game by finding a second equalizer but were unlucky as Moritz-Broni Kwarteng saw his effort saved.
Fullkrug then completed his treble in stoppage time from the penalty spot after Cristian Gamboa fouled Bynoe-Gittens in the box. The 30-year-old has now scored nine league goals.
Jadon Sancho, who arrived on loan from Manchester United this January, played 82 minutes of Sunday’s match. He has so far made three appearances for the Bundesliga side.
