Manchester City are currently third on the standings with 16 points, three behind second-placed Arsenal, who thrashed West Ham 3-0. Tottenham, on the other hand, are sixth with 12 points in eight games. City host Aston Villa on December 9 while Spurs entertain Man Utd on December 10.

How Manchester City Beat Spurs

Manchester City and Tottenham started the game well before the first half turned out to be Bunny Shaw’s. City had the breakthrough with their first opening of the game after 23 minutes of play.

Leila Ouahabi released a fine cross into the box from the left wing and it was met by a bullet header from Shaw. Tottenham’s goalkeeper Becky Spencer did manage to get a hand on the ball but there was too much power on Shaw’s header.

City got their second goal of the match in the 32nd minute, thanks to Shaw who was once again in the right place. The 26-year-old had to stoop to meet Jill Roord’s cross with her head before steering the ball past the goalkeeper.

Six minutes later, Shaw scored again to complete her hat-trick. She was under pressure in the penalty box but did well to control Laia Aleixandri’s cross before firing a low shot that beat the goalkeeper. This was Shaw’s sixth hat-trick in English football.

Spurs manager Robert Vilahamn brought on Rosella Ayane for Zhang Linyan at the break in an attempt to try and change the game. However, things only got worse as City increased their advantage to four three minutes after the restart.

Lauren Hemp finished magnificently from the edge of the box before she assisted Roord’s goal that made it five. It was Roord’s fifth goal in eight matches as she continued her fine start to life in England after joining Manchester City from Wolfsburg.

Laura Coombs, who added City’s sixth, put the finishing touch on a stunning evening for the hosts with a brilliant finish in injury time.

What The Managers Said

“It is one game. We have had so many opportunities and every game can potentially turn into that score-line tonight. I think it is such a positive for us (On City’s goalscoring record). We knew when we come up short last season it was scoring them at the top end and keeping them out at the bottom. The pressure for us always starts at the top end of the pitch.” Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor is quoted by Sky Sports.

Speaking after Manchester City beat Spurs 7-0, Spurs manager Robert Vilahamn expressed his disappointment and apologized to the fans for his side’s poor display.

Seven-nil is not a fun result, I apologize to the fans about that result, because it’s not a result we should have. But if you look at Man City and how they scored their goals in this game, they are a really great team – we tried to play our style but they win the ball and they score goals. We are still going to try and do what we are supposed to do, but they hurt us today.” Sky Sports quotes Robert Vilahamn.
