Raised in Philadelphia’s most criminalized neighborhood, the Raymond Rosen housing project, Bernard Hopkins was involved in crime at as very young age. He was 17 when he was given an 18-year term and entered Graterford Prison in 1982.

During his time in prison, he developed passion for boxing and joined the prison’s boxing program. He fought 99 times while in prison, winning 95 and losing just 4 of the bouts.

After completing five years in prison, Hopkins was freed and he decided to change for the better. Hopkins became a Muslim, abstained from narcotics, alcohol, and junk food, and never went back to jail.

On 11 October 1988, Bernard Hopkins made his pro boxing debut as a light heavyweight, losing to Clinton Mitchell. After a sixteen-month layoff, he resumed his career as a middleweight, defeating Greg Paige via unanimous decision.

Hopkins then added 20 notable victories in the middleweight division. In 1995, he became a world champion for the first time by winning the vacant IBF middleweight title. He would go on to complete 20 defences and became recognized as one of the best boxers in the world.

In 2001, Bernard Hopkins defeated Felix Trinidad to successfully unify the middleweight division. Three years later, he defeated Oscar De La Hoya for the WBO title to cement his status as undisputed champion. In 2006, he become the oldest boxer to ever win a world championship at the age of 49.
