Hakeem Olajuwon was born on January 21, 1963, in Lagos, Nigeria and is the youngest of six children born to his parents, Muideen and Abike Olawajun.

His father was a police officer while his mother was a homemaker.

The centre began playing basketball at the age of fifteen years after being introduced to the sport by his elder brother, Kareem who played basketball for the University of Lagos.

The center’s performance was extremely good and he was recruited by the University of Houston to play basketball. His college career was successful and he led the Cougars to the NCAA Final Four, being named the Naismith College Player of two consecutive years.

He was drafted in the 1984 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets and immediately won the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

His 18-year NBA career was successful playing for the Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic.

While playing for the Houston Rockets, he won two NBA championships and was a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a 12-time NBA All-Star.

He retired from playing basketball in the NBA in 2002 and six years later, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Hakeem is married to Dalia Asafi and the couple is blessed with four children and he has a daughter from his previous relationship.
