The sudden demise of veteran Kenyan sports personality Sean Cardovillis is a hard blow to the sporting arena.

A cleaner at his apartment of residence along Rhapta Road, Westlands found his lifeless body lying on the staircase on Saturday morning, September 9.

Cardovillis lived alone at the apartment’s fourth floor. The cleaner alerted the police who rushed to the scene accompanied by an ambulance.

However, on-site medics pronounced him dead at the scene. They collected his body and drove him to the morgue as official investigations commence on what killed him.

Preliminary reports indicate that he was seen on Friday leaving for a bike ride and returned shortly before 7pm. Authorities have stated that they are still awaiting information regarding the circumstances surrounding his demise. To ascertain the cause of death, an autopsy will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.

SEAN CARDOVILLIS MEDICAL CONDITION

In February 2022, his family posted an online appeal for financial assistance. He was at the time hospitalized in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) due to lung-related complications. The appeal stated that he was dealing with episodes of chest pains which doctors diagnosed to be acute pneumonia which made one of his lungs to fail.

His also had an infection around his heart which complicated his treatment but he pulled through.

SEAN CARDOVILLIS CAREER

Cardovillis had a deep passion for sports and served as a sports presenter at Capital FM. His role involved delivering sports updates from Monday to Friday and hosting the Saturday Music and Sports show. In a remarkable return to Capital FM in June 2023, after an absence of 18 years, Cardovillis eagerly embraced the station’s efforts to revamp its sports coverage. He always spoke of his dalliance with the radio station birthed by the late billionaire industrialist Chris Kirubi.

The veteran sports journalist was scheduled to interview the acclaimed world and Olympic champion, Faith Kipyegon, who holds three world records on Saturday afternoon.

He boasted an extensive and illustrious career in sports journalism that spanned more than two decades. Over the course of his profession, he lent his talents to esteemed organizations such as Capital FM, Standard Group PLC, and Nation Media Group, serving as a radio and TV sports commentator.

His expertise was not limited to Kenya, as he also made significant contributions to Paradise FM and Tal FM in Seychelles during the period from 2006 to 2012. Further, Cardovillis covered an array of prestigious international sporting events throughout his distinguished career. This includes the London and Rio Olympics, the Cricket World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, and the Africa Cup of Nations.

One of his notable achievements was conducting two interviews with golf legend Tiger Woods in Dubai, specifically at the Dubai Desert Classic. Cardovillis received numerous accolades for his exceptional work, including the 2007 BBC Africa Radio Award for sports and the Sport Award at the 2007 CNN/Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Awards.

SEAN CARDOVILLIS LIFE

Sean was not only highly respected among his peers but also garnered significant admiration for his profound expertise in motorsport. His impact was particularly evident during the 2023 WRC Safari Rally Championship in Naivasha when he conducted an interview with President William Ruto.

In addition to his prowess in motorsport reporting, Sean possessed a gift for the written word – sports writer. However, it’s his commanding presence and distinctive voice on the radio that will remain etched in the memories of many, a legacy he upheld for a significant duration.

Capital FM described him as a focused and industrious employee who steered the station to great heights in matters sports.
