Matt Barnes was born in Santa Clara, California on March 9 1980 to Henry Barnes and Ann Barnes. His father is African-American while his mother is white. Barnes has two siblings, a brother named Jason and a sister Dannielle.

He lost his mother a few years ago when she succumbed to lung cancer and  Barnes had a Mohawk in her honor.

His father Henry Barnes is a former professional basketball player who played in the Continental Basketball Association and the International Basketball Association.

Jason, his brother, is also a former professional basketball player who played in the CBA and NBA Development League while his sister Danniele is a nurse.

The player attended Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California where he was a standout athlete in both football and basketball, being named All-American, All-state, All-CIF, All-City, and All-league in each sport.

After High School, Barnes played college basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles where he was a two-year starter and helped the Bruins reach the NCAA Tournament where he was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention.

Barnes was married to Gloria Govan and they were blessed with three children though they divorced. He is currently engaged to Ansa Sims, a plus-size model and the daughter of legendary model Beverly Johnson and they have a son together.
