On January 1, 1972, Lilian Thuram was born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, a French colony in the Caribbean. When Thuram was a little boy, his family relocated to the French mainland, where he spent his early years in the Paris neighborhood of Champigny-sur-Marne. Thuram was a gifted athlete when he was younger, excelling in a variety of sports like football, athletics, and handball.

He rapidly emerged as a top football player and was noticed by numerous French professional clubs. He entered into his first professional deal with AS Monaco in 1991 when he was 19 years old.

Thuram started his club career in 1991 as a right-back with AS Monaco. He became a team leader and a vital contributor almost away, and in just his first season, he helped Monaco win the Ligue 1 championship. Thuram played for La Liga team Barcelona for two seasons beginning in 2006. In his debut season, he assisted Barcelona in capturing the La Liga championship, and in 2009, he played on the squad that captured the UEFA Champions League.

Thuram spent one season in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Barcelona, then announced his retirement at the age of 36 in 2008. Thuram participated in more than 500 games for his club and scored 15 goals throughout that time.

Thuram tallied two goals in the semi-final matchup with Croatia, including a standout solo effort that is recognized as one of the finest World Cup goals ever.

Thuram participated in the Euro 2000 tournament, which France won, and remained a crucial player for France during the next several years. He also participated in the World Cups in 2002 and 2006, when he was a key player in advancing France to the championship match. In 2002, France was eliminated in the group stage.
