The longstanding relationship between Manchester United and adidas began in 2015, following the end of a 13-year partnership with Nike. The original deal, reportedly valued at £750 million, will continue until its expiration in 2025, after which the more lucrative renewal agreement will take effect.

In an official statement released on the club’s investor relations platform, Manchester United confirmed the renewal of their principal partnership with adidas as their official kit supplier. The agreement is set to span another decade, showcasing a shared commitment to style, flair, and high performance between the two iconic entities.

The financial implications of the deal are noteworthy, with a guaranteed minimum cash sum of £900 million over the course of the contract. This equates to an average annual revenue of £90 million, solidifying Manchester United’s position as one of the most financially formidable clubs in global football. The new agreement surpasses the previously similar 10-year deal signed by Liverpool with Nike in 2020 and falls behind only Barcelona (with Nike) and Real Madrid (with adidas) in terms of sponsorship deals on a global scale.

The 10-year extension signifies an impressive milestone for the partnership between Manchester United and adidas, which will span a remarkable 20 years by the time it concludes in 2035. In the club’s rich history, various sportswear brands have adorned the team’s kits. Umbro supplied unbranded kits for an impressive 30 years from 1945, following the return of club football after World War II, until 1975. Admiral took over for the rest of the 1970s, followed by the initial 12-year partnership with adidas from 1980 to 1992. The subsequent 10 Premier League seasons saw the return of Umbro shirts, and later, Nike took over the contract until 2015.

It is worth noting that the previous Nike deal with Manchester United was the most substantial of its kind at the time, amounting to £302 million over 13 years. This landmark agreement dwarfed Nike’s other partnerships, such as their deal with the Brazil national team, which was valued at £7 million per year.
