Speaking after today’s victory, England manager Sarina Wiegman said they were happy with the win as it is all that matters.

It’s all about winning games of course. We also want to play well. But we never take anything for granted. We have to work really hard every time we play any game. We are really happy with the 1-0 in the end and that’s what counts.” BBC Sports quotes Sarina Wiegman.

Lauren James Introduces Herself on The Global Stage

Chelsea star Lauren James announced herself on the global stage today by scoring a fantastic goal. Lauren was drafted in from the start and she showed the world her quality inside ten minutes. The 21-year-old stepped in off the left and curled a sumptuous effort that went straight into the net. There was little that Denmark goalkeeper could have done to prevent that rocket from going in.

Lauren continued to impress throughout, showing creativity and the unpredictability that she has been exciting Chelsea fans with.

Despite Lauren proving to be a real menace for the Danes, they showed a spirited fight while in search for an equalizer. Amalie Vangsgaard, who scored the winner against China in their first World Cup match, almost found the back of the net but her header hit the right post. England held on to the narrow 1-0 lead until the match’s referee blew the full time whistle.

England’s joy of scoring first against Denmark did not last long as their talismanic midfielder Keira Welsh went down due to injury after half the hour. Welsh had a little contact and fell down before gesturing to the bench that she could not continue with the math due to pain. She is arguably England’s best player being taken off on a stretcher is the last thing English fans wanted to see.

Giving an update on Walsh’s injury, Wiegman told BBC Sports, “I know nothing about Keira’s injury. It looked serious, if you get stretchered off it looks serious, but I don’t know. She’ll probably go for a scan but I’ve not heard anything.”
