Career
Raphael Varane began playing football in the Arrondissement of Lille at the age of seven for local club AS Hellemmes. After two years, he joined Lens and went through the club’s youth system. He was part of Lens’ under-16 team that won the Championnat National des 16 ans in the 2008-09 season.
Raphael Varane signed his first professional contract ahead of the 2010-11 season. He was then promoted to Lens’ reserve team where he made his debut in the opening league match, which ended in a 2-0 victory over Drancy.

In the summer of 2011, the French centre-back joined Real Madrid on a six-year contract. He made his debut for the La Liga giants as a half-time substitute in the pre-season fixture against Los Angeles Galaxy.
