African record holder Olusoji Fasuba still keeping fit - Sports Leo

Nigerian Olusoji Fasuba was once one of the fastest men on the planet, and still holds the African 100m record at 9.85 seconds, but his biggest triumph came indoors when he won the 2008 world indoor 60m title.

Although he retired from top-flight athletics 10 years ago in his mid-20s, Fasuba still likes to keep in shape. And he is doing just that in his own garden – by racing his two young children.

Nigeria Athletics posted on twitter: “In this lockdown period, AR [African Record] holder Olusoji Fasuba tries to channel his inner speed abilities, but his daughter decided to remind him he’s a retired athlete and she’s one for the future.

“Peep the youngest daughter who wasn’t having it after being left out.”

At the age of 35, Fasuba has been retired for a decade.

Speaking to vanguardngr.com, Fasuba said his retirement from competitive athletics was a financial decision.

“I think I did a lot for my nation, but I didn’t get anything back. There were no guarantees in terms of a retirement plan. All the money I made was from outside,” said Fasuba.

“My state and a few banks supported me, but the athletes I was competing with then, I knew how much they were getting; it was a hundred times more than what I was getting and their retirement had been sorted but mine hadn’t, and I was investing in the sport as well, so I had to make my own plan and I had to do it family-wise.

“I won’t really say it (retirement) was the best time for my career at that moment but family-wise it was for me because it positioned me for where I wanted to be and I’m quite happy with where I am now.”
