  • Here is how they managed to win the title albeit strong competition from Arsenal all throughout the season

As the 2022/23 Premier League season approached, Manchester City were heavily favoured to secure the Premier League title.

With the acquisition of Erling Haaland, whose remarkable goal-scoring abilities were widely recognized, it seemed inevitable that City would add more trophies to their collection. However, for a significant part of the season, their journey to glory appeared uncertain.

Nevertheless, with three matches still remaining, City can now relax and rejoice in their accomplishment of winning the title for the third consecutive time. Let’s delve into the events that led them to this point.

Manchester City Journey to Premier League title

Man City’s acquisition of Haaland prior to the start of the season left many believing that the title race was already settled. With an already formidable team, City’s addition of this prolific striker seemed to guarantee their success. How could they possibly be defeated?

As expected, the goals started pouring in. However, City encountered a problem on the defensive end, where they were conceding goals at an alarming rate. They suffered a 3-0 defeat against Newcastle in the third game of the season, which later turned out to be not as disastrous as it seemed. In the months surrounding the World Cup, City struggled to avoid dropping points.

Their form took a hit with a 2-1 loss to Brentford on November 12, followed by draws against teams fighting relegation like Nottingham Forest and Everton, as well as defeats to Manchester United and Tottenham. While this performance was not entirely terrible, it coincided with an impressive winning streak from a young Arsenal side who relished their underdog status.

Under the guidance of Mikel Arteta, a protégé of City manager Pep Guardiola, Arsenal climbed to the top of the table, and City’s stumble suggested that the Gunners could potentially secure an unlikely Premier League title.

Critics wasted no time in dismissing City’s chances, but Guardiola’s tactical adjustment, introducing a 3-2-4-1 formation that caused a buzz on Tactics Twitter, quickly changed the course of their season. City started winning match after match, resembling the team everyone expected them to be.

Man City unleashed their dominance and intensified the pressure on Arsenal, defeating them 3-1 at the Emirates in February before ultimately reclaiming the top spot with a convincing 4-1 victory in the return fixture two months later.

The Cityzens maintained their relentless pace, while Arsenal’s momentum began to fade. Arsenal had a series of draws before their second humbling defeat to City, and a 3-0 loss to Brighton left City needing only three points against a struggling Chelsea side to secure the title.

Guardiola desired for City to achieve this historic feat on their home ground, but fate had a different plan. The Nottingham Forest team, who had posed significant challenges for City earlier in the season, inadvertently did them a favour by defeating Arsenal 1-0 on May 20, ensuring that the Gunners could no longer catch up.

This victory marks City’s seventh title, Guardiola’s fifth, and a remarkable third consecutive triumph for a City squad that still has aspirations in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.
