The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is in significant jeopardy due to the region’s extreme weather, which might put an end to the race before it even gets underway.

The Imola Regional Weather Service has issued a red-level weather warning, with forecasts estimating that the next few days would see up to 300mm of rain.

Recently, the rain has been unrelenting in northern Italy, causing hundreds of people to flee their homes. Tragically, the extreme weather has also tragically resulted in the deaths of two people.

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix comes this weekend, so there is no letup this week either.

According to the most recent weather predictions, Imola will experience above-average rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours, with as much as 100mm of rain possible up until Wednesday night.

The team’s initial preparations for the first leg of a busy triple-header, which also includes trips to Monaco and Barcelona, could be hampered by the bad weather.

However, the Imola circuit has so far avoided being affected by this extreme weather, thus the race weekend is strongly anticipated to proceed as scheduled.

Local mayors were recommended to close schools and highways that were at risk of becoming submerged in water due to serious flooding concerns, and this recommendation came after a meeting of the National Crisis Unit. Travel was discouraged for citizens as much as possible.

Extreme floods earlier this month in the Emilia-Romagna area resulted in the deaths of two people and the forced eviction of hundreds of others. According to a spokeswoman, the carnage did not cause any harm to the Imola track.

The challenging scenario has unavoidably increased the chance that the Imola F1 weekend will be negatively impacted, either for fans traveling to and from the circuit or perhaps having some impact on how the event is conducted.

F1 insiders are adamant that there is no concern about the Emilia Romagna GP not taking place, despite the red alert status has given rise to rumors that it might even be postponed. As scheduled, teams and officials are on the road.

The forecast may jeopardize the plans to test a new qualifying tyre configuration at Imola, where only the hard tyres are scheduled to be utilized in Q1, the mediums in Q2, and the softs in Q3. It may be necessary to use the complete wets and intermediates instead.

Regarding wet tires, this weekend will see the debut of a new full-wet tire compound.

A new compound of full wet tires will be used starting with this grand prix, and they won’t need to be warmed up beforehand, according to Mario Isola, Pirelli’s head of motorsport.
