Cricket South Africa (CSA) paid tribute to the distinguished administrator, Julian Thornton, and former WP Board player, Noel Brache, who both died on Tuesday.

Thornton served as president of the Natal Cricket Association under the auspices of the South African Cricket Union and also served on the national body, being its treasurer for a long period of time.

He also served on the Board of the United Cricket Board of South Africa after its founding in 1991.

KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union president Ben Dladla led the tributes: “Julian will be remembered as a distinguished administrator who added immense value to both CSA and KZNCU, particularly through his strong financial attributes.”

Brache was part of a well-known cricket family in the Western Province who served the game with distinction both on and off the field of play. His particular association was with the Avendale Cricket Club. He played for the Western Province Cricket Board prior to unity and continued his career after unity.

“Noel will be particularly remembered for his contribution to the development of youth cricket in the Western Province,” said CSA vice-president Beresford Williams. “It was a passion of his.”

“Julian and Noel both made outstanding contributions in their respective spheres to the game they loved,” commented CSA Acting Chief Executive, Dr Jacques Faul, “and we thank them for that.

“On behalf of the CSA Family I extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends and cricketing colleagues.”
