Eliud Kipchoge’s hopes of clinching the Boston Marathon title on debut ended up in dismay as the world record holder finished a distant sixth, in a race won by defending champion Evans Chebet of Kenya.

Kipchoge had hoped to become the first man to win all six of the world majors, but he could not keep up the tempo of a tough race in Boston as he timed a disappointing sixth in a time of 2:09:23.

Defending champion Evans Chebet clocked 2:05:54 for back to back titles, as 2021 champion Benson Kipruto finished third in 2:06:06, beaten by Tanzania’s Gabriel Geay who timed 2:06:04 after a sprint finish in the final 500m of the race.

“I trained very well so I told my coach not to worry because I felt really good. There was a lot of rain but I managed to run well. I am happy to have won today,” Chebet said after the race.
