Manuel Neuer began playing football at a very young age. He was two years old when he received his first football. The future Bayern Munich star played his first match on 3 March 1991, a few days before turning 5.

Neuer attended Gesamtschule Berger Feld, a secondary school located on the Erle region. The school is notable for producing professional footballers such as Joe Matip and Mesut Ozil, among others.

Neuer joined Schalke 04 youth system in 1991 and went through the ranks before making his senior debut in 2004. During his time with Schalke 04, Neuer helped the team win the DFL-Ligapokal in 2005 and the 2010-11 DFB-Pokal.
