Sabitzer brace eliminate Tottenham from Champions League

Sabitzer brace eliminate Tottenham from Champions League - Sports Leo

RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer scored two early goals as they eased past last year’s Champions League finalists Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in their last 16-second leg tie on Tuesday to reach their first quarterfinals by 4-0 on aggregate.

Sabitzer fired the lively German side in front with a low shot from about 20 metres after 10 minutes and they never looked back, pinning the visitors, who were without injured strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, in their own half.

Leipzig’s captain was then given far too much space in the 21st minute to head home Angelino‘s cross at the near post after Serge Aurier‘s poor clearance as the Spurs’ players heads started to drop.

“After the first one [goal] went in it didn’t change much but we conceded too many chances as a team,” Spurs’ Dele Alli told BT Sport after the match. “It’s hard to come back from those two goals. We had to show our maturity and fight and we didn’t do that.

“We can’t use excuses, we still have quality on the pitch. We are missing good players but that happens.

“The players coming in have to step up and we haven’t done that today. We apologise to the fans. To go out and lose like that, they deserve better.

“We have to fight. We can’t be in the position we are in in the league, we can’t hide. This hasn’t been a good season for us. The reality is we are in a bad situation, confidence has gone at the minute.”

Emil Forsberg completed the victory for the Bundesliga club with a third goal from inside the box in the 87th minute.
