World Athletics announces finalists for Fair Play Award 2022

The world Athletics on Thursday announced the finalist for the 2022 Fair Play Award with winners expected to be revealed early December through the World Athletics social media platforms.

During the World Athletics Championships that was held in Oregon22 August 2022 the World Athletics invited members of the public through their social media to participate in the voting process.

The scores from the process that lasted for six days were combined to determine the below three finalists.

1. Katie Nageotte and Holly Bradshaw

Nageotte, is a successful American athlete specializing in pole vaulting having competed and won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Women’s pole vault.

Bradshaw is a British based athlete also specializing in Pole Vaulting.

The two got netizens attention on social media during World Athletics Championship in Oregon after Bradshaw got injured during the warm up session and Nageotte, her competitor immediately ran over to support her.

The injury saw Bradshaw withdrew from the competition to allow another athlete to proceed a move that that was received by lots of abuse through social media but Nageotte through her twitter handle to defend her.

2. Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Andriy Protsenko

Yoroslava Mahuchikh and Andriy Protsenko are both high jumpers from Ukraine.


The World Athletics Championship was happening at the time when Ukraine was still facing the invasion challenge but despite all the this the two fought to win Silver and Bronze medals.

3. Katarina Johnson-Thompson

Thompson, an English athlete competing in both heptathlete and an indoor pentathlete and she will be taking a mentoring role in heptathlon.

After Germany’s Sophie Weissenberg recorded several fouls during the World Athletics Championship in the long jump competition, Thompson was able to offer her support with this giving her fans a motivation to vote her to the finalist.

According to a statement the World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said the appreciation of athletes in and off the field will definitely demonstrate integrity of athletes and motivate their efforts in competing in fair play spirit.

“It is an intrinsic value of sport and I am personally extremely proud to see our athletes recognized for a Fair Play Award. This will demonstrate the integrity of our athletes and their profound commitment towards one of the core values of our sport: competing in the spirit of fair play.” Said Coe.

The CIFP was found up to 50 years ago with a core mandate of promoting fair play in sport to honor all those who respect the written and unwritten rules of sport with over nine awards having been won since the World Championships in 2003.
