Bayer Leverkusen wrapped up what has been a perfect Bundesliga campaign with win over Augsburg on Saturday evening.

Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-1 to complete the first unbeaten Bundesliga campaign in front of home fans. The treble-chasing German giants became the first club in Europe’s top five leagues to end a season without suffering defeat since Juventus during the 2011-12 campaign.

Leverkusen were already crowned German champions weeks ago and have ended the season with 90 points, which is the highest-ever in their history. They are 17 points above second-placed Stuttgart. Bundesliga powerhouses were forced to settle for third place after suffering a shock lose to Hoffenheim on final day of the season.

Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen played their last Bundesliga match of the season, manager Xabi Alonso challenged his players to aim for more success in European football. Neverkusen are in the final of this season’s UEFA Europa League where they’ll play Atalanta.

“To reach 90 points is extremely strong. The record is 91, we just missed that, but to remain undefeated is extraordinary. This achievement is outstanding, not only in Germany but also in Europe. From tomorrow we have our next big goals in sight – the next week is unique with these opportunities.” Xabi Alonso said after Bayer Leverkusen’s final Bundesliga match, according to Sky Sports.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Augsburg 

Playing in their final Bundesliga match of the season, Bayer Leverkusen knew they had to keep their unbeaten run going. They started the game on a high note but struggled to break Augsburg solid defence.

However, an error by the visitors goalkeeper Tomas Koubek led to him giving possession to Amine Adli who unselfishly passed the ball to Victor Boniface to open the scoring.

Leverkusen were in control of the proceedings at the BayArena and doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Robert Andrich reacted swiftly to pounce on a loose ball after Jonathan Tah’s effort had been blocked.

Things changed in the second half as Augsburg became the better team and created more chances. After several attempts, the visitors pulled one back shortly after the hour mark, thanks to Mert Komur. The 18-year-old German curled in a sumptuous finish in the 62nd minute to see the scoreline change to 2-1.

As expected, that goal opened the game up, with Leverkusen looking for a third goal to seal their win and Augsburg aiming for a leveller.

Patrick Schick and Andrich came close to increasing Leverkusen’s lead but it was Koubek’s dazzling save to deny Granit Xhaka that was much talked about. Koubek once again made a fantastic save to deny Florian Wirtz when in a one-on-one position. On the other end, Augsburg also had several chances missed.

Leverkusen players lifted the Bundesliga title at the end of the match in a party atmosphere at the BayArena. A bigger party will be done after Xabi Alonso’s side play their final two games of the season.

What Next For Leverkusen?

Bayer Leverkusen have wrapped up their Bundesliga campaign but still have two big matches before calling it a season.

As already stated, Alonso’s men will face Atalanta in the Europa League final on Wednesday, May 22, in Dublin. They will then have another chance to win a silverware on Saturday, May 25, playing in the final of the DFB-Pokal against second-tier Kaiserslautern.

Leverkusen are so far unbeaten in 51 matches and their 90-point tally in the Bundesliga is just one point short of the record which stands at 91.
