Veteran boxer Mike Tyson is taking dramatic steps in preparation for his fight with Jake Paul in July.

Tyson is not smoking weed nor having any intimacy as he looks at making history during the match with 27-year-old Paul.

This is in addition to his hard training regime for the last couple of months. Tyson says that he has a lot to prove to the world and his opponent who doubles up as a YouTuber.

The boxing legend will be 58 when he takes the ring against his fellow American. He considers it the best birthday gift and victory is his ultimate prize.

Does Mike Tyson Smoke Weed?

Mike Tyson doesn’t hide the fact that he occasionally hits a puff of weed and enjoys the highs of it. Considering that he grew up in a violent New York neighbourhood, it is no surprise that he still smokes marijuana.

Speaking recently at The Damon Elliott Show, Tyson said that he is looking forward to July 20 for his bout with Paul. The fight will be held at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, Texas.

He hasn’t smoked in three weeks nor had any intimate engagement within the same period and he plans to abstain until the fight is over.

“I’m living my life disciplined now, so I’m going to have to fight disciplined now,” he told Forbes Life in a different interview.

Tyson has openly smoked marijuana since retiring and even started a cannabis company. His love for the stimulant is so big that he named his podcast after the practice of smoking it

His podcast is known as ‘Hotboxin’ and refers to smoking weed indoors. Tyson also enjoys smoking ‘the holy herb’ in the studio. Although he is not in any legal trouble for this, his boxing days were nearly ruined by his deep dependency on marijuana.

Following his bout against Andrew Golota in 2001, Tyson tested positive for marijuana and was fined in addition to receiving a 90-day suspension.

He had objected to taking a drug test before the fight. He would later declare that year that he should have smoked during his whole professional boxing career, which concluded in 2005.

Years after retiring from pro boxing, he admitted to giving fake urine samples drawn from his wife and infant for drug tests.

Since marijuana use has become more widespread, the majority of states have stopped testing boxers for the drug. This is according to Mike Mazzuli, president of the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports.

However, the State of Texas according to the Marijuana Policy Project still locks up anyone found in possession of marijuana.

According to ESPN, lightweight boxing prodigy Keyshawn Davis was slapped with a 90-day suspension in 2023 after testing positive for marijuana while in Texas.

The State’s threshold for a positive marijuana test in combat sports such as boxing is 50 ng/ml. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist notes that a drug test can identify THC contained in Marijuana even after a single usage.

THC is a psychoactive component of marijuana. Aware of this, Tyson is staying away from smoking because he will be fighting in Texas and he will be tested for THC.

In some of his other exhibition matches, such as that one in Los Angeles in 2020, he passed his drug test but still smoked marijuana.

Mike Tyson Vs Jake Paul Fight

The biggest exhibition match of 2024 will be between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. After retiring in 2005, Tyson is making a comeback for an exhibition bout.

Paul describes his fight against Tyson as a great honour and a realization of his dream. Being able to demonstrate his boxing prowess is what drives him most, he says.

“My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime,” Paul stated.
