Allen Iverson is a former American basketball player who primarily played for the Philadelphia 76ers for fourteen seasons and his career was faced with several controversies.
Apart from playing in the NBA, he also had stints overseas and with the NBA D-League and October 2013 marked the official end of his professional basketball career. Born by a single mother and growing up in hardships, he found solace and purpose in athletics.
He attended Bethel High School where he became a star athlete in both football and basketball, leading his teams to state championships in his junior year. He did so well until his life took a turn on allegations in a bowling alley altercation.
The player enrolled at Georgetown University and here, he set the school record for career scoring average and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year twice. However, after three turbulent years, including legal issues, he declared for the NBA draft in 1996.
He was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996 with the first overall pick and played for fourteen seasons where he led them to the NBA finals. His career however was faced with some injuries and clashes by management that made him get traded between several teams.

His career began at an early age as his growing up had several challenges and in the sport, he found solace. He excelled at Bethel High School and became a star both in football and basketball, leading his team to state championships in his junior year.
His talent on the court was undeniable as he also won the Associated Press High School Player of the Year award in both football and basketball. However, his life took a turn when he was wrongly accused in a bowling alley altercation and despite the charges being overturned, the incident cast a shadow over his early career.
He excelled academically and in sports, being enrolled at Georgetown University, where he set the school record for career scoring average and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year twice. Three years later, he declared for the NBA draft in 1996.
Iverson was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA draft, as the first overall pick. Beyond the court, he became a cultural icon who influenced fashion and hip-hop culture as he dressed in baggy clothes, tattoos and cornrows, an image that changed the traditional picture of an NBA player.
However, he showed individual brilliance but the team struggled to achieve team success, but led them to the NBA finals in a series against the Los Angeles Lakers and throughout his career, he won four scoring titles.
Injuries hampered his stay with the 76ers and he was traded to several teams including the Denver Nugget and then the Detroit Pistons, to the Memphis Grizzlies before returning to the Philadelphia 76ers for a short period to officially retire with the team that drafted him. He retired from playing basketball in October 2013.
Allen Iverson Controversies
At the age of 17, the young player was wrongly accused of involvement in a bowling alley fight and though the charges were dropped, the incident cast a shadow over his entry into the NBA. During his playing time with the 76ers, he commented in a press conference “We talkin’ ‘bout practice” not a game, a statement that was seen as disrespectful to the importance of practice and created a media frenzy.

His fashion sense challenged the traditional image of an NBA player as some saw it as a violation of an unwritten dress code. His desire to win often led to clashes with the coaches and management, which led to his trade from the 76ers.
He was working on a rap album but it faced criticism for the lyrics that were deemed offensive and this controversy led him to drop the project.
