Tusker striker Eric Kapaito celebrates his goal against KCB
Tusker face Sofapaka in Machakos
They have gone for seven matches without defeat
Gor Mahia have opened a 10-point gap on top
Tusker FC will take on struggling Sofapaka in Machakos, looking to continue their winning run and possibly move to second on the FKF Premier League standings. The Brewers have been on a massive resurgence towards the end of the first leg and as the second starts, they hope to continue in the same manner.
The brewers are unbeaten in their last seven matches, with five wins and two draws and playing against Sofapaka, they hope to make that six wins and eight matches without defeat.
They go into the match in Machakos beaming with confidence especially after last Sunday’s massive 5-0 thrashing of KCB, their biggest win of the season.
“We forgot about that result as soon as the match ended and we shifted focus to the next game. We want to keep our run going and we can’t afford to get over excited by any result,” defender Tom Teka said.
He added; “We know we are facing a good Sofapaka side but we have to go all out and ensure we win. We can’t underrate them because of their place on the table,” Teka further added.
Sofapaka have been struggling this season, but under new coach Zedekiah Otieno, they thrashed Bidco United 3-0 last weekend. They will look to make back to back wins, and victory will sail them out of the relegation zone if teams above them don’t pick wins.
City Stars are keen to make it seven wins in a row and move back to second spot in the FKF Premier League standings when they take on Posta Rangers at the Ruaraka Complex.
City Stars have been in brilliant form and after settling issues with their coach Nicholas Muyoti, they hope to get on with their run. Muyoti had been approached by Shabana and the tactician had considered a move, but a meeting this week settled issues.
And the tactician hopes his side can continue winning.
“We know that matches will get tougher as we go on and the boys have to know that we cannot play the same. We need to add on the effort. It is not easy but I thank the players for the work they have put in,” the coach said.
He added; “I knew we would do well but not in this way, so the team has really surprised me. We have set the bar for ourselves and now we have to maintain.”
Posta who are fourth in the standings can also potentially move second with a win, and John Kamau’s men, who have been blowing hot and cold last few matches, are under pressure to perform.
They have lost three of their last five matches and have won only once.
Gor go 10 points clear
Gor Mahia players celebrate their win over Kariobangi Sharks.
Gor Mahia meanwhile opened a 10-point gap on top of the log with a hard earned 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks. Chris Ochieng scored the lone goal, to take Gor to 40 points, 10 ahead of Bandari FC who rose to second spot after a 0-0 draw away to Kakamega Homeboyz.
Ochieng, who came on as a second half substitute, scored the winner with a 91st minute screamer, picking the ball from almost 40 yards out and wading off a challenge before thumping an unstoppable shot with his weaker left foot.
It was a nervous match for Gor, who survived some few instances of close calls from Sharks, the closest being an Eric Mmata chance that was saved by the keeper one on one.
Head coach Jonathan McKinstry was delighted with the victory, which preserved their unbeaten record so far in the league.
“We spoke candidly at halftime on what to change. We made some few changes and I thought with that we started playing forward more. In the last 25 games we were on top and pressing. We kept the pressure on and we got something,” the coach said after the match.
Their next match is a blockbuster duel against a resurgent Tusker FC next Sunday at the same venue.
