As a junior tennis player, he won the Eastern Transvaal Junior Championships at the age of 13 while also learning to play golf with his father, Neels. It took Els a short time to be good in golf and he was already playing better than his father when he was 14.

Ernie Els soon began participating in amateur golf tournaments and won the Junior World Golf Championships after defeating a young Phil Mickelson in 1984.

Els turned pro in 1989 after winning the South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship. Two years later, he won the Southern Africa Tour.
