Sonja Vasic; the Serbian playing doctor

Sonja Vasic is a former Serbian professional basketball player and doctor who played in the Small forward position and represented Serbia’s national team internationally. She was drafted by the San Antonio Stars in the 26th overall pick of the 2009 WNBA draft.

Before she was drafted in the WNBA,  Vasic played for Serbian youth basketball where she made her professional debut with Beograda and went on to play professionally in Europe and the United States. She was a member of the Serbian national team that won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Sonja Vasic Educational Background

Vasic is a lady with a lot of knowledge in education and her basketball career. She has an extensive background in both music and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Vasic attended the Stevan Hristich Music School, in Apatin, Serbia. She also attended Secondary Music School in Valjevo, Serbia and acquired a Master’s Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Arts, Belgrade, Serbia.

Vasic is a Medical Doctor- General Practitioner who underwent a Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Program with a speciality in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In addition to her formal education, Vasic also participated in numerous informal training programs and workshops related to human rights, social services for persons with disabilities, training skills and psychosocial support to families with differently-abled children.

Sonja Vasic Personal Life

Vasic was born on February 18 1989 in Apatin, Serbia to parents of the country’s descent. From a young age, she exhibited a passion for basketball and spent most of her time sharpening her skills on local courts. She quickly rose through the ranks of Serbian youth basketball, capturing the attention of coaches and scouts.

Her dreams came to reality when she made her professional debut with one renowned Serbian basketball club known as Beograd which was a path leader to European and American basketball.

Besides excelling in her basketball career, she is also successful in her academic pursuits. She pursued a degree in music, demonstrating her well-rounded personality and her ability to balance her athletic endeavours with her academic interests. Her career took a turn when she was drafted by the San Antonio Stars of the Women’s  Basketball National Association in the 2009 WNBA draft.

During her WNBA career, the player showcased her ability by contributing to the success of the Stars while earning her recognition for her talents. Her international basketball career was also impressive and was a key player of the Serbia women’s national team, playing in numerous EuroBasket tournaments and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Her contributions during the Olympic games were instrumental in securing a bronze medal for her team.

Sonja Vasic is a Serina former professional basketball player. Her passion for the sport began when she was still young where her hometown courts became her training grounds, nurturing her love for the game. Her determination to pursue the career caught the attention of scouts and coaches who were all interested in training her.

At the age of 18, Sonja made her professional debut with Club Beograd, a renowned Serbian basketball club. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey that took her to play in Europe and America. In her career, she made several achievements and here we take a look at the most notable ones:

  • She is a three-time EuroLeague Champion
  • She is a three-time Serbian Player of the Year
  • She won the Europe Young Player of the Year Award
  • She was named EuroBasket Most Valuable Player in 2021 

After playing for more than a decade,  the player announced her retirement from playing professional basketball which was taken positively by the basketball community as she had made an immense contribution to the sport. She is currently a head coach of the Tolka Rovers Basketball Club in Dublin.
