Career
Fred Couples began playing golf from a young age as he had access to the Jefferson Park golf course. Unlike many professional golfers, Couples learnt how to play golf on his own and never hired an expensive professional swing coach.
In 1977, the talented golfer went to the University of Houston on a scholarship, joining the Houston Cougar’s men’s golf team. As a 19-year-old amateur, he beat an experienced Don Bies in a playoff to win the 1978 Washington Open.
Couples turned pro in the early 1980s and recorded his first PGA Tour victory at the Kemper Open. The American golfer would go on to win fourteen more PGA Tour titles, including the 1992 Masters Tournament and two Players Championship in 1984 and 1996.
