Career
Dinesh Karthik began playing cricket at the age of ten. He was coached by his father who was a first-division cricketer from Chennai. He was initially a batsman but learnt wicket-keeping while playing on the Tamil Nadu youth team.
Karthik received promotion to the under-19 side of Tamil Nadu at the start of the 2000/2001 season. The following season, he made his first-class debut for the senior side. Young Karthik played as a wicket-keeper in his debut match, which was against Baroda.
Karthik had a difficult start to his senior career and was dropped from the season’s final matches due to repeated wicket-keeping errors.
He would then attend a wicket-keeping camp under the guidance of former Indian keeper Kiran More. His performance improved and he received a call for India Emerging Players to play against Sri Lanka and Pakistan afterwards.

At the beginning of the 2003-04 season, Dinesh Karthik was recalled to the Ranji Trophy. He impressed with his performance throughout the tournament and was selected for the India squad in the 2004 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
In October 2004, Dinesh Karthik made his Test cricket debut against Australia. His limited over career began that same year as India played against England at Lord’s.
