Ashish Nehra came through the ranks with impressive performances in domestic cricket to make his international debut in 1999. He played his first Test match on 24 February, picking 1/94 in his only innings. The match, which was affected by rain, ended draw.
Nehra made his ODI debut two years later against Zimbabwe, this time picking 2/33 at Harare. India won the match by nine wickets.

In the Indian Premier League, Nehra represented five different franchises. He had spells at Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils (DD), Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and the now defunct Pune Warriors.
