Career
Erik Lamela began his football journey at Rive Plate as a seven-year old in 2000. During his time with the club’s youth set-up, he impressed many with his performance.
Trans World Sport travelled to Argentina to interview 12-year-old Lamela after he scored 120 goals for River Plate’s youth side the previous season. During the interview, Lamela said he would wish to follow in the footsteps of Argentina’s great Diego Maradona and also win the World Cup for his country.
Lamela continued to develop at River Plate and made his senior debut for the South American club on 14 June 2009. He came on as a substitute and played the last ten minutes of the match against Tigre. On 5 December 2010, he scored his first goal for River Plate in a match against Lanus.
On 6 August 2011, Erik Lamela secured a transfer to Italian side AS Roma, signing a five-year deal. In his first season at the Stadio Olimpico, the Argentine scored six goals in 31 matches.
On 30 August 2013, Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur signed Lamela from Roma. The midfielder established himself as a regular starter at White Hart Lane during the 2014-15 season with Pochettino in charge. He was one of the key players in the midfield that also had other stars such as Mousa Dembele and Moussa Sissoko.
On 26 July 2021, Lamela left Tottenham Hotspur for Sevilla. With the La Liga club, he won his first silverware last season, the UEFA Europa League.
