Born in Belgium, Thomas Vermaelen started his football journey at Germinal Ekeren in 1991. He spent eight years at the academy before the club changed to Germinal Beerschot after a merger. Vermaelen joined Ajax youth academy in 2000 and made his professional debut for the senior team in February 2004 in a 2-0 victory over FC Volendam. Young Vermaelen had an impressive debut season, helping Ajax win the 2003-04 Eredivisie title.
