David Warner began playing cricket at a young age. When he was 13, his coach asked him to switch to right-handed batting because he kept hitting the ball in the air. However, his mother encouraged him to continue batting using his left hand.
He would later break the Sydney Coastal Cricket Club’s under-16-run-scoring record. Warner toured Sri Lanka with the Australian under-19s before eventually making his debut with the Eastern Suburbs at the age of 15.
On 11 January 2009, Warner made his debut for the Australian national team in a T20 International match against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This made him the first cricketer in 132 years to represent Australia without ever participating in a first class-game.
