  • Mary Earps is England’s goalkeeper
  • Nike has refused to provide a duplicate of her No 1 shirt for sale
  • England will play the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals on Sunday

Mary Earps, the England 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup star feels wounded over the refusal by Nike to sell a model of her No 1 shirt.

She says that the American sportswear giant removed her image from the team in the run-up to Sunday’s final

Earps is anxious for her family and friends to receive her gear finally. Her angry supporters have joined her in asking the sportswear behemoths to reverse course.

She is the current FIFA female goalkeeper of the year with 40 caps since 2017. Earps who plays for Manchester United says she has been pushing behind the scenes to get Nike to change their mind.

And now that the England Lionesses have made history by making it to the World Cup final, commentators and followers on social media are supporting her appeals.

Following Wednesday’s 3-1 semi-final victory over Australia in Sydney, Nike issued a “Pure Lionesses’ energy” congratulations message but omitted Earps from the montage of players.

Many of her online fans believe the company ignored her in an unsuccessful attempt to diffuse the shirt scandal. Nike reportedly believes goalie shirts don’t sell well.

However, the majority of fans seem to have doubts about this assertion or believe the firm is disrespecting the Earps.

One of the supporters said it was unfathomable even to think that football enthusiasts can’t buy a shirt from England’s favourite goalie.

Thus, they asked that Nike be fixed because its decisions are deeply irrational.

“Time to fix this @nike? (can’t imagine an England men’s team in the world cup final and being unable to buy the goalie kit…) #Lionesses,” a fan posted online.

Another fan said that it was weird for Nike to hold back from selling Earps’ shirt yet it was the first time the Lionesses made it to FIFA Women’s World Cup finals since 1996.

A third fan said that it was unfathomable that Earps’ fans can’t buy her shirt while she is readying to play in the finals on Sunday.

“Mary Earps is about to play in a World Cup Final. And kids still can’t buy her shirt. Sort it out.”

The fourth fan was more blunt stating that: “You can’t buy her shirt because Nike didn’t think it was worth making it. Made all the others, just not Mary’s.”

England’s women’s football team made history by reaching the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final after defeating Sweden 2-1 in the semi-finals. This is the first time that the Lionesses have reached the final of the tournament, and they will face either France or the Netherlands in the showpiece match on July 31.

The team, led by Sarina Wiegman, has been in impressive form throughout the tournament, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three. They have also been boosted by the return to fitness of star striker Ellen White, who has scored five goals in the tournament.

The final against Spain will be a tough test, but England will be confident of their chances of winning. They have a strong team with a good mix of experience and youth, and they will be determined to make history by lifting the World Cup trophy.
