Sourav Ganguly began his cricket career as a small boy playing in under-15 tournaments. In 1990, Ganguly played in evered Ranji Trophy and made a name for himself in the tournament. Based on his performance in the domestic competition, he was handed his ODI debut in January 1992 in a match against West Indies.
However, things didn’t go well for him in his first outing as he failed to impress and also became infamous for his arrogant attitude. He was immediately dropped from the national team, making him return to domestic cricket.
Ganguly would impress in the next two seasons of Ranji Trophy, scoring heavily. Prior to India’s tour of England, he impressed while playing a Duleep Trophy and was called again to the national team. He made his Test debut at the Lord’s and recorded the highest score (131) by any batsman on debut at Lord’s.

From 1997 to the 1999 World Cup, Ganguly scored 1533 test runs and 3237 ODI runs. He hit his career best score of 183 runs in ODI during the World Cup. Due to his impressive performance, he was named the captain of the ODI team in 2000.
It was during his time as captain that India broke Australia’s streak of winning 16 consecutive test matches in 2001. He ended his international career in 2008 with the test series against Australia being his last.
